Abstract

According to the chapter, sustainable teacher development has an urgent need to change teacher professional development processes into sustainable, integrated processes in eco-systems of lifelong learning. This chapter Sustainable Teacher Development: Integrating CPD into Lifelong Learning Frameworks explains why professional development processes of teachers must change as a matter of urgency. With the recent spurt of changes in education, such as when it becomes integrated with content and technology, inclusive pedagogies, post-pandemic recovery, and global sustainable engagement, traditional Continuous Professional Development (CPD) frameworks are likely to have limited long-term consequences due to time constraints, workforce pressures, funding shortages, institutional resistance, and unequal access, especially when it occurs in rural and low-resource settings such as Nagaland, India. Based on the theoretical premises formed out of the UNESCO and OECD paradigms, the chapter delves into such theoretical constructs as andragogy, sociocultural theory, and reflective practice. It mentions such models as the CPD Framework of the British Council (with 11 professional practices by the stages of development), Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) and competency-based approaches towards sustainability education. Practical approaches feature job embedded practices, communities comprising of practitioners, systematic supplies and active methods, such as reflection cycles and action research. Case studies (e.g., implementations of British Council in India, Thai PLCs, UNESCO initiatives) have been demonstrated to have a positive impact on the teacher motivation and retention, pedagogical innovation and student outcomes. Issues related to equity (gender, generational, cultural), and evaluation beyond attendance are discussed and teachers are advised (personal learning plans), school leaders (embedded programs), and policymakers (so-called framework-based shifts with incentives and monitoring). Lastly, the chapter provides the paradigm of CPD being a smooth component of the lifelong learning process to empower educators, develop adaptive systems, and build equitable and future-ready learning ecosystems.
